The Club’s tennis program has played a large role in the history of US and international tennis. The Club has been home to competitors (and winners) at Wimbledon and the Davis Cup. The tennis complex and program evolved from Roland Park to Five Farms from the original grass to har-tru courts in June 2007. The Club’s 10 courts and tennis pro-shop allow for a thorough offering of events and services for all skill levels and ages. Competition, camaraderie and education are consistently highlighted for members, their children and their guests.
PADDLE TENNIS
Arguably the most social of any racquet sport, paddle tennis (the proper nomenclature is platform tennis, but most call it paddle tennis in this region) is a great opportunity to surround yourself by the beautiful scenery of the rustic nature of Roland Park. The sport is said to be a cross between cross-country skiing, racquetball and ping-pong. In the brisk air of the mid-Atlantic it is traditionally played Fall to Spring.
SQUASH
The international sport of Squash was introduced to our members in 1907. At that time, squash was primarily played in Britain and only available to the elite in the states. The introduction of squash to the Baltimore Country Club was presage of the future of the game in the US. In 1923, the US Squash Organization initiated a program to promote squash in the states (History of Organization, on October 5, 2009). Squash, is yet another racquet sport that holds a place in the history of the nation. The doubles court and the Maryland Club’s doubles court (finished in 1965) enabled the 1965 National Doubles Squash Championship to return to Baltimore. The two new international singles courts opened in 1998.
